Storyboard and animatic
I started with little "hand-drawn on paper" drafts (the usual storyboard); here's the beginning of the short...
...but quite suddenly I felt the need to transpose this in 3d. So I built the scenes with simple primitives and raw mesh objects, to have a simplified cg animation useful for timing and the addition of the soundtrack (this is called an "animatic").
The animatic has the unvaluable advantage to let you see in real time how your animation works. Because it's made just only by simple non-textured objects it render really fast, especially if you render it in opengl; more, it's a good starting point to build up step by step the complete shot.
Here you can see some frame from the animatic I built for the teaser, at different stages.

The main reason I made the teaser was to experiment different solutions for the several "secondary" elements to be included in the final short (the landscape, plants, trees and ferns, the terrain, etc.). It has been a sort of "general" play, to try also additional visual effects (the allo's sput, the pool shaking, etc.), the several sound effects and the addition of the music score.
